Burrs, now a Country Park is one of Bury's earliest industrial sites. Notable for its exploitation of water and its association with the Peel Family.
Although many of the buildings which once made up the two mill communities at Burrs and Higher Woodhill have now gone, enough remains to give an interesting insight into manufacturing technology and life in the early 19th Century.
Burrs Activity Centre is located in the renovated mill workers cottages. A bunkhouse occupies most of the upper floor with extensive views over the site towards Peel Tower on Holcombe Hill. The ground floor houses a Cafeteria, Climbing Wall, Equipment store, toilets, showers, and the Centre's office.
The river Irwell meanders through the park with canoeing grade 2/3 sections depending on the water levels. With a canal to make the return upstream a figure of eight circuit can be made. The park also has a permanent Orienteering course.
